Silk and Bamboo
“The function of music is to quiet and sober the mind, thus rendering it susceptible to divine influences.” John Cage, the 20th century’s leading composer philosopher
Zen Buddhist philosophy underscores this unique and ethereally beautiful event which springs from the Australian rendering of traditional Japanese culture. Shakuhachi grand master Riley Lee joins koto player Satsuki Odamura in performances which enclose a screening of DREAM WINDOW: REFLECTIONS ON THE JAPANESE GARDEN (dir:John Junkerman, 1992, 57'). Complementing the performances, emerging designer Fukutoshi Ueno (below left) creates special bamboo sculptures and leading fashion designer Akira Isogawa (right) projects his kimono-inspired images onto silk curtains. Their new collaborative furniture pieces, DRESS-CODE, will receive their first public viewing.
Four outstanding Japanese-Australian artists will transport you to that quieter, other place of contemplation of Nature and beauty at the core of the soul.
